I think I want to marry this block. Seriously. If I didn't hate triangles so much I'd make a giant king-sized quilt with this exact block repeated over & over & over ...
# 18 Century of Progress
Ok. The fabric placement in the book for this block TOTALLY drove me banana-nuts-crazy.
I mean, I get random, deliberate mistakes and even symbolism (I think I read on the Flickr Group that this block has something to do with a Ferris Wheel), but I usually crave symmetry. And this block just looked like ... like ... well, like someone should stop messing around and fix it already! So that's what I did for mine.
And I'm not the only one with this problem 'cause I've seen LOTS of FWQALers alter this block too. I consider myself to be in good company here. :)
So with all due respect to the very lovely person who designed this block, here's my "century" that progressed to "symmetry".

Yes, I can see your problem with the century block and like yours waaaayyyy better. Something just didn't seem right. And your color choice is AWESOME!

okay I think your blocks have finally done me in! So pretty. I caved in and bought the book, now I have to decide on fabrics. Lovely. Look forward to seeing more.

Beautiful blocks and such pretty fabric choices. I've not made Century yet myself but I do remember looking at it in the book and thinking that it just didn't look right - like your version much better and will probably do similar myself.

I can't stand it . After we get done with this redecorating the home I am going to really learn to quilt. I just love what I see you doing and all the wonderful fabrics.
Can't stand it anymore -- your FW blocks are so beautiful, I had to comment and let you know how envious I am of your talent and wonderful fabric choices.
I'm with you on changing century, and will be doing so when it comes up for its turn on Sun. I like your version. Haven't decided how I'll do mine yet. Maybe I'll copy you :)
Love it and so tottally needed changing, you go girl slight delay on the pic of my embroidery (i ran out of thread lol ) but i will send it i promise ( if you have no clue what im on about i emailed you :p )

More lovely blocks - and I agree with your changes in the interests of symmetry!!
I think your block is how it should have been done in the first place ;) My OCD wouldn't have allowed the asymmetry.

Your blocks are beautiful and I totally understand the symetry thing....I have stared at the block pictured in the book and wanted to color over it......it looks out of balance and like someone made a mistake. I like your version better!

Those are lovely. Love the pink, green yellow, blue and white. So sweet! And totally agree with the changes to make the block symmetrical. Absolutely lovely!

ahhh yes...loving these ones too! Your Birds in the Air looks cool, and I'm wishing I had changed the colours up a bit on mine. A whole quilt would be gorgeous, but would probably do your head in LOL

That birds in the air is just gorgeous, and all i can say is i purchased the book and that will be all i am doing its way to hard for me.
I so get that about "Century of Progess". It was my first attempt at foundation piecing. I swear it nearly drove me insane!! There wasn't much progress going on! In the end I didn't load it on flickr because I was so upset at the way it turn out.
I love what you did with yours. I think I may have to play around with this one again.
Oh that is gorgeous... much better that the FW sample... wowsers... I really want your FW quilt! But you inspire me to get busy! I have 7 squares done... sis has over 50... overachiever... LOL.... I am bringing up the rear... yours are beautiful! Love what you did with this block! Do you paper piece? How are you doing your blocks so tiny and making them come out so fabulous???? Can you do a tutorial some day on that? I am doing the larger ones but would love to make a few smaller ones for sure to put in a few small frames.... just a thought... ya... like when you are bored and have nothing to do - LOL...
