japanese hexagon flap bag

This isn't the first time I've made this Hexagon Flower Flap bag.  In fact, it's the fourth.  I made three versions of it as shop samples and taught a few classes on it.  But that was ... wow, like 8 years ago!  If I recall correctly (and that's a big if these days), this was the first "Japanese" bag I ever made.  It also started my love affair with Japanese bag-making techniques, patterns, craft books & magazines, and of course fabrics.

It's a clever little design with the hexie flap and the little snaps inside so you pleat the opening or leave them undone.  I was inspired by the gorgeous Daiwabo acorn/stripe print I found last year (sorry, very hard to find) and I used old scraps from my precious Japanese fabric stash for the hexagons.

I love this bag! I also found a source for the fabric (yeah!) and I would love to know what pattern you used for the bag so I can get that too!

That is an adorable bag!! Would make a great gift. I have a lot of Japanese sewing books, mostly handbags and home interests. They are very inspiring and a great way to see design techniques that may be new to us. I use my translator app on my phone when I really want to understand what is being said, but the photos and diagrams in the books are so well done you don't really need words!

Thanks for sharing your cute bag :-) Cindy

So, maybe I missed something but I think you need to make this into a pattern that the rest of us can buy from your store! I am in line!

I wonder if you could get a good spray paint and paint those black snaps an off-whitish or taupe sort of color. Let them dry so the paint hardens good. That would look nice on this bag. Very nice work. You never disappoint; you make such pretty things.

Such a pretty bag. I love that acorn fabric, it's very striking in the centre of the bag. It's a fantastic design. How clever to pinch in the sides to make it smaller when you don't need a big bag.

Just beautiful. I bought all those Japanese magazines and books but sadly, I never made anything from them. This could be the project that gets me going.

Beautiful fabric, beautiful pattern, beautiful flap. I love the pinch feature. What is the name of the pattern and where can it be found? I would really like to make myself one of these purses.
