great granny sew along & giveaway

Hello and Happy Monday! 

Welcome to the final installment of the Great Granny Squared Sew Along with Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet and Fat Quarter Shop.  If you've been sewing along, you know the drill - I've got photos of this week's project, which is a ton of fun to make by the way - and a link to your homework PDF, as well as a copy of Lori's new book to give away to one of you. :)

The last thing you need to make for this quilt - but certainly not the least - is the Label Block. 

It's a whimsical change from the traditionally little label we so often associate with quilts - and it has a blank square in the middle of the block for you to customize with whatever embroidery design you like. 

Lori's book has lovely label ideas and embroidery templates.  I started my stitched square with Lori's floral motif and then did a little designing of my own.

Since I don't need a quilt label at present I took another idea from Lori's book - adding a border to my block - and turned it into a zippered cushion cover.

Not surprisingly, one of my girls requested it for her room in our new house.  So what about the other girl?  Well, this block is so quick and easy that I didn't need any arm-twisting whatsoever to whip up another one ...

For those of you who don't embroider - I know you're out there ;) - try adding a little ribbon to the center square as an alternative to stitching.

(A few extra details on the back of a cushion is never a bad thing.)

I try to add a small label to my quilts but sometimes forget because it's a new thing for me to add labels.

Too often I have mailed off a quilt or garment forgetting to attach a label, great intentions. I've had to hang a large note to remind me to not forget the label next time.

Hi, I always label my quilts with an applique heart with hand embroidered name and date, my embroidery is rustique to say the least! I used your technique to make a label for my sewing machine cover using felt and ribbon printed with scissors, I was really pleased with it., thank you for showing us how to do it. Regards Sharon

I am full of good intentions! But not many labels. One of my goals is to be better about this, photographing my quilts before they leave the house, and finishing my containers of unquilted quilts! It is summer for this college prof, so there is hope on many levels here at he beginning of summer!

I am a labeler - nothing elaborate, just a cotton or muslin piece hand-written in permanent marker, even for my charity quilts given to Mayo Clinic/St. Mary's Hospital Pediatric Infusion Therapy Unit (kids' chemo). I want those brave children to know someone cares.

Yes, I label. I enjoy embroidering a message or name I gave quilt or special occasion. My granddaughter's quit has a label with her name and sweet saying. She folds her quilt so that is what is showing. Love that girl! :)

I am a labeler. I name my quilts and include that on the label along with my name and the date. I embroider the letters and hand sew the label to an edge on the back of the quilt.

Hahaha, I have got to be in group 3. Good intentions~ a friend even sent me some labels, but its one thing I just don't get around to.. maybe one day I will go back and label everything; but I'd rather just make a better effort starting now. Your pillows are adorable!
