great granny sew along & giveaway

Hello and Happy Monday!

Welcome to the final installment of the Great Granny Squared Sew Along with Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet and Fat Quarter Shop.  If you've been sewing along, you know the drill - I've got photos of this week's project, which is a ton of fun to make by the way - and a link to your homework PDF, as well as a copy of Lori's new book to give away to one of you. :)

The last thing you need to make for this quilt - but certainly not the least - is the Label Block

It's a whimsical change from the traditionally little label we so often associate with quilts - and it has a blank square in the middle of the block for you to customize with whatever embroidery design you like.

Lori's book has lovely label ideas and embroidery templates.  I started my stitched square with Lori's floral motif and then did a little designing of my own.

Since I don't need a quilt label at present I took another idea from Lori's book - adding a border to my block - and turned it into a zippered cushion cover.

Not surprisingly, one of my girls requested it for her room in our new house.  So what about the other girl?  Well, this block is so quick and easy that I didn't need any arm-twisting whatsoever to whip up another one ...

For those of you who don't embroider - I know you're out there ;) - try adding a little ribbon to the center square as an alternative to stitching.

(A few extra details on the back of a cushion is never a bad thing.)

For more inspiration, check out my labelling partners over at Pink Penguin and Lily's Quilts.  And remember to add your photos to the Great Granny Squared Flickr Page to be entered for the weekly prize.

Without further ado, I'd like to give away a copy of this beautiful book, which is page after page of gorgeous photography, inspiring designs and easy-to-follow patterns.  If you'd like a chance to win, leave a comment on this post (not an email) telling me if you are a labeller, a non-labeller, or - like me - a labeller with good intentions who doesn't always get around to it.

This giveaway is open to all and closes Sunday May 26th.  I'll announce the winner soon after.   Good luck to you!

No, I don't label... I see few labels that I like on items... I don't mind them on the inside of things usually, but that's just something else I'd forget about! lol!!

I am one of the well-intentioned, but my sweetheart is a stickler for labeling the quilts we give as gifts, so I'm getting better. Funny, though, he just wants the names of the recipients whereas I feel the creator's name belongs on the label, too--even both of our names, as the givers. So we work hard to get the wording just so. Now I need to start labeling the quilts that aren't being given away.

Labeller - at least I want to be. I haven't finished my first quilt yet, but I'm forever yelling at myself because I don't label and date things . . . then I have to go back and try to figure it out. So I want to label my quilts.
Your pillows are gorgeous, your girls are very lucky and will have the best decorated rooms :)

I ALWAYS add a label! I had them custom made for me. They aren't embroidered, but the design on them was drawn by my adult daughter just for my labels. I absolutely love them!!

Do I label? I'd like to say Absolutly! Everything I make. But that would be more than stretching the truth. It is something I need to be more diligent in doing, as in the job is not compete unless it is labeled. Beautiful pillows. No pillows on the couch - just my dog.

Your pillows are beautiful! Thanks for sharing and giving us a chance to win in your giveaway. I'm a labeler. I usually put a label in all my quilts, but not pillows or handbags I've made.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMelanie
I am most definitely a labeler with good intentions. Sometimes a label just doesn't look right on some projects. So I let it go. Then later I think I should have added one. Oh well!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKathy E.
I have recently turned in to a labeler. I didn't always label my quilts but after reading a few posts about lost quilts and how they were reunited with their makers due to a great label, I have been putting them on all of my projects

I'm hoping to be a labeller once I actually make a quilt. I'm about to embark on my first mini so I'm hoping to pop a label on the back of it once I finish it! I love your pillows - of course!

Well I always label my Project Linus quilts. I have labelled ones I give away for gifts but I don't always label my art quilts. I do take pictures of every quilt I make so I have that as a history. I made my first custom label when I did Lori Holt's Row-a-long and that was a lot of fun. She makes labels special! So I guess I like to label but don't always do it. Thanks for the darling pictures of your pillows and of course awesome details that you add. Always an inspiration. K-

I try to label each project, but sometime one gets forgotten... Oops!
Your pillows are SEW darling!!!

I'm a labeler, with more or less good results! I have tried with plain cotton, qc in a contrasting color than the backing, linen edged with a blanket stitch, and squares of text print, that I write on with permanent ink and set with an iron. I'd love to design and order some "real labels" for occasions when I don't have the time or want it to look extra special. I do a lot of swaps, so what I Really need to do is order some cute visiting cards to tuck in with my swaps! Thanks for sharing a copy of this sought after book by Lori!!
