The Next Generation

Sorry, couldn't resist the Star Trek reference. ;)

My best friend from high school recently became a grandmother of a darling sweet little girl.

Oy yoy YOY!

I remember - like it was yesterday - the moment we met, way back in the summer of '82.  I remember zipping around town in the passenger seat of her "vintage" blue Pinto - standard shift with a hand brake.  I remember us cutting class to go shopping ... for dress patterns & fabric, of course.  I remember us cutting class to see An Officer & a Gentleman. (Please don't tell my kids.)  I remember us laughing so hard while trying to put up a tent ... in the dark ... in the rain ... after a 2 hour drive to the lake.  I remember walking down the aisle as her bridesmaid.  I remember writing letters when she moved away.  I remember her girls' baby showers.

If only I could remember where I put my embroidery scissors the other day ...

(sigh)

Anyhow, this means I get to make a baby quilt!  So.much.fun.  I haven't made one in ages, it seems.  Of all my baby quilt gifts, however, this one is going to have an extra special place in my heart.  There have been so many babies for my in-laws, friends, aquaintances & neighbors.  But this little girl is the first of the next generation for me.

The nursery is decorated with a Wedgwood blue & chocolate brown colour scheme.  After making these pillowcases, I took another look at Tanya Whelan's Petal collection and decided the blues & taupes are perfect for this quilt.

While I was wandering around the quilt shop waiting for my fabric to be cut this print also caught my eye - from Verna Mosquera's Pirouette collection  ...

Then it suddenly occured to me that my friend's daughter was an accomplished dancer ... and this apropo script of ballet terminology would make the perfect personal touch for the quilt.

So now you know what I'll be doing this coming weekend.  What are you working on?  Have you made a baby quilt for a special little someone lately?

I don't remember '82 at all because I just was born then;-) Therefore there's no next generation for me yet and to be honest most of my friends don't have children already so no baby quilts. But I'm looking forward to made baby quilts for my best friends kids in the next year.
PS: Still love yours from one year ago!

So surreal - right? Your friend is so lucky in many ways, but for sure - because her grandbaby will be a recipient of one of your quilts! It will be beautiful in those colors and you did score with that script fabric! Enjoy the project and try not to cry - your turn will be coming sooner than you think!

Oh, Kristyne - that pallet of colors and prints is absolutely gorgeous. I LOVE blue, especially feminine pastel.

I have the beginnings of 2 flannel baby quilts for 2 of my nieces. Ryker (my 8th great-nephew, no grandbabies for me yet; my kids are only 11 and 12) is due in August and is being done in greens and browns and camo dinos - cute, I know.

#10 (I also have a great-niece) is not due until December and we don't know if it a girl or boy yet. So that one is just going to be done in bright, primary colors.

I just need to get to the craft table and get busy. Oh well, back to "With Fabric and Thread".......

Kristyne, your sentiments are dear and the fabric is beautiful. The baby's mom will love the tribute to dance. My daughter is a dancer and I know she would love that. With your scraps you may want to consider making Amy's SWEET DREAMS little quilt. I did that for my new granddaughter and her mommy loved it. Just what you need....one more thing to do...but just saying. My daughter whose baby boy just turned one, is a huge....and I mean huge...hexie fan....so I always keep an my eye on your hexie projects.

I love the fabric! She is going to LOVE it! Cant wait to see it finished. I have have been working on a '30 re-bloom quilt, but not in '30 reprint fabrics. I coudnt find a good background fabric so I went to keepsake quilting, and,of course, found what I needed. Keepsake quilting is awesome! If you haven't been there I recommend going. I hope you do some hand embroidery on this quilt to make it extra special. Cant wait to see it finished!!

Love the color choices.....I am sure the new mom and grandmom will love the quilt because you made it! I am working on some old fashioned embroidery, a wagon full of flowers, using Weeks hand dyed embroidery thread....I love the stuff!!!

That fabric is to die for! I'm partial to 1982 because I had my oldest in 1982 (June 4 to be exact)
And I LOVE Star Trek! Have you seen the latest movie? It's Amazing and we are going to see it for the second time on Memorial Day!

Such pretty fabric choice, of course! Wow, a grandchild. They must both be young Mums coz you're only about 40 right? My cousin is due to have a baby today! I have the quilt planned, an idea I've made up and I have the fabrics, but no time to get it made. Work and kids keep getting in the way. But I am good at getting things done when I do get a free weekend or holidays.

1982...the year I graduated , a great year! Along with An Officer & a Gentleman and so many more memories. Sounds like you have a few also. The Petal collection is one of my favorites right now, what a beautiful quilt it will make for a wee little one. How lucky to be that special person to receive one of your handmade quilts, wow! My hair stylist just had a baby boy and I made a quilt for them from the Oink-a-Doodle-Moo collection, it was a simple block quilt but made with love and was fun.
I really enjoy your "one year ago today" link. I can't believe how fast time goes by, seems like just last week. Have a wonderful weekend.
