Hexagon Love Affair

For the longest time, I had this oh so pretty Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Garden Rose pile of fat quarters on one side of my desk.

And these two templates on the other side.

I bought these fabrics here a while ago and for a long time I didn't know what I was going to do with them.  I just liked to stare at them while I was working away at my computer.

I've also had a love affair with hexagons since my very first quilt ... in 1987 ... and the several quilts that followed ... all English paper-pieced.

My girlfriend had these templates and I've been dying to make something with them ... just didn't know what.

Until one day I FINALLY made the connection.  DUH!!!  Use the fabrics & the templates for the same project!  (Sometimes it takes me a loooooooong time to connect such obvious dots.

So I got to work.

Happy work.

Very pretty happy work. :)

The kind of work that (almost) makes you totally forget you have any responsibilities at all ... you know, like picking up your children from school and making dinner ... (why doesn't my family like to eat peanut butter sandwiches or cereal for supper?  It's not like my cooking is anything to write home about!)

One word...Crockpot. Throw stuff into it in the morning on low and forget about it. You could probably even throw peanut butter and cereal into it and after slow cooking all day it would be pretty tasty. No solution for the children pick up. You are on your own for that one.

Do you know that I started a hexie quilt a few days ago!?! Too funny, right? About the children pickup-supper-thing: sometimes I'm glad that I don't have children (although I hope someday in the future there will be some;-) : no pickup and I can eat what I want (and then regret it when I'm looking at my waist;-). I'm sure your hexie quilt will be gorgous! Hildy

Very pretty. No wonder you're happy. Can't wait to see the "progress" shots. As for kid pick-ups -- just has to be done. Supper -- hmm, does your husband cook?

Oh I know Kristyne, families can be SO demanding can't they, expecting cooked food! ;)

I can't wait to see how this turns out. I've had my eyes on that fabric for awhile but I have not figured out how to use it! And I wonder if you're planning to use paper templates?

Oh wow... those fabrics are sooooo soothing and pretty and soft! I got the english paper piecing bug this year... what a fun, addicting carry along project! I love working with my hands and making the tiny stitches and piecing all these together and I love the accuracy - never had heard of EPP until I read about it somewhere and then researched and was hooked! I had jelly roll strips and used my templates to cut hexies out of them to have a stack to work on and used Lori Holt's tutorial - I love the way she uses the paper clip to hold the fabric and doesn't sew through the paper - it really works - the only thing I do different is punch a paper punch hole in the middle of the hexagon paper before I start so I can pop it out easier when it is time to remove it with a hemostat or tip of an eraser, etc. Oh my I love it - I haven't made very many flowers so far - about 8 - but they are so much fun! Yo yo's too - oh man those have been a fun find - the Clover yo yo makers - great way to use up scraps!!!!

I started a hexagon quilt (by hand) 6 years ago. I am STILL working on it. I do intend to finish it, it is my SLOW quilt... I am waiting with bated breath to see how those colours come together! They are so soft and lovely - I think it will look VINTAGE right away!

O! What a pretty stack of fabric! Funny post, I agree with you on the sandwich part! Why cant dinner just make itself and no cleanups required!?

Kristyne, I am hand quilting a hexagon quilt but I used the SewLine glue pen to baste my fabric edges to the hexagon and I was finished in NO time. I am now in love with this pen for applique too. This is definately the way to go (for me at least.) The glue is the perfect stickiness to hold the fabric in place and when you remove the hexie papers, they just pop out. Glue washes away beautifully, too. Amazing! Fons and Porter makes a similar glue pen sold by JoAnn's fabric online. Just wanted to pass along a cool tip to a fellow hexie lover. Have fun!

Oho! Watch out Kristyne - you'll get addicted to yet another vice in the quilting world. Hexagons NEVER leave you alone! Enjoy!
