Introducing Wanda the Witch

Ok you guys.  Please don't make fun of me, but I want you to meet an old friend of mine ...

Wanda the Witch.

I cross stitched her onto a Laura Ashley turtleneck about 20 years ago.   (So, technically, the Laura label makes it "designer", right?)

And I've worn her (almost) every Halloween since, including last nite.

(Notice my outline oopsies on the shoe ... this was my first time using waste canvas.)

Wanda's my annual tradition.  I used to wear her out and about in the 90s (just for the week before Halloween!).  But now I only wear her when I hand out candy.

I still really like her.

She's cute.

Her and her cockeyed scaredy cat.

Do you have something in your closet from a long time ago that you still bring out once a year for a silly special occasion?  I could use some moral support here because I know all my stylish friends are totally rolling their eyes at me right now and throwing up their hands in dispair because despite their attempts to drag me and my wardrobe into this decade, I still exhibit an occasional inability to let go of past fashion trends that have long since been deemed ... hmmm ... what's the word ... ill-chosen? unacceptable? tasteless?

Oh wait.  I got it.

Straight up no-holds-barred WRONG!  LOL!

So.  Anyone?

A Christmas sweater, perhaps?  Or maybe even a pair of MC Hammer pants?

And you told me Halloween wasn't so big by you. Now I find you you have a special 20 year tradition associated with Halloween. You are just in denial.

Traditions going back years involving clothes...I have a twenty year old sweatshirt with a Santa juggling wrapped peppermints that I made. I guess that is pretty silly.

I have a black sweatshirt with pumpkins/jack-o-lanterns appliqued around the hem. Oh yeah, the kids love it when I wear it.......NOT. I have some sweatshirts with Santas too....need to get those ready for Christmas. :) The kids will be thrilled.

I don't - but I think a cross stitched Christmas sweater DIY is in my future. Your sweater looks awesome!

I sported my new "orange" (like glow in the dark almost) "ORANGE" pants, black top with spider web embroderied with spiders dangling and my ghost earrings. Tacky, maybe, fun, YES! Have fun and when you decide not to wear it anymore, cut it out and frame it in a hoop!

'fraid not Kristyne, I'm totally ruthless with clothes, if I haven't worn it in the last 6 months or year at the very most, it moves on!... I can see how you could be fond of wanda though! :)...vivienne x

A little bit of bad taste adds spark to a wardrobe! And it gives people something to talk about! I might have a vintage tie with Christmas stockings and a bowtie with Christmas trees. And maybe a red reindeer ski sweater (but it's Polo, so that makes it ok, right?!) I kinda look forward to wearing all of them every December. But not all at once!

It is your parental responsibility to wear such "special" clothing just to embarrass your kids.....unfortunately, all my "holiday wear" was sent to Goodwill a few years ago...my daughters invaded my closet. But now, when they get invited to an "ugly sweater" party, then have nothing to borrow!!!

Seriously though, how in the world did you keep it looking so clean after 20 years???? What's your secret?? LOL

Erm...no! One the other hand, it's quite a way to scare the trick or treaters ;o)

Gosh! You SEW AND you wear nerdy clothes! Ha Ha! I love this post! I don't have a piece of holiday clothing except for Christmas socks that I wear most of December (I'm talking more than one pair here folks). But my favourite thing is a little holiday pin of a snowman wearing a silver thimble for a hat! So cute :) Keep your silliness going - it's good for the youthful soul! Wendy

I have a sweatshirt I cross-stitched for Christmas that I wear every year. It has a Christmas tree sitting in a pot, and the ornaments are buttons that have been sewn on. I'm not sure how long I've had it, but at least 15.

Your post made me instantly miss my waste canvas! I did every sweatshirt with something I loved.. Precious Moments was all over me! Oh,those were the days, wonder where they all went? have to go looking around.

LOL.... yes... Christmas sweaters... and my favorites ended up now being worn to ugly Christmas sweater parties... so I've retired them.... but loved to wear them when the kids were younger! I think your cross stitch has held up beautifully over the years - good job!

I, embarassingly, go way back further than 20 years!! In college I had an amazing vacation with my family on the West Coast and one of the 'souvenirs' I purchased was a lovely warm sweater that had a koala bear stitched on the front. It immediately became my 'comfort sweater', worn to cheer me up whenever I was low. Just the other night, I was having a down moment and my husband asked where my koala sweater was....the darn thing is now 36 years old!! I used waste canvas a LOT when my boys were little--I had so much fun cross stitching little trains and bears on their clothes! What great memories!

Hmmm, I say if it is Comfy and/or Fun... then wear it! lol. But then I'm at an age where the Fashion Police no longer bother me. Your shirt is cute!

I have a Halloween cardigan that I've worn for at least 15 years. I must admit it's looking just a little worse for wear, but I can't bear to part with it, LOL!! Love your shirt!!

Yep, yep, yep.... why, I still have my 'after the wedding' outfit when I got married 21 years ago! GASP!

Wait.... why am I talking about weddings?! You are talking about Holidays... yeah, I still have a Christmas Tree sweatshirt from the 90's, but, ahem... it doesn't fit me that well. ;-)
