Day 8 - S is for Stitch - AND a Giveaway!

Today's the last day of my book tour and so I guess it's my turn.

I can't exactly "review" my own book ... that would be weird.  But I can share with you some behind the scenes stuff.

The 26 girl alphabet designs were purely labours of love for my daughters.  I had absolutely no intention of turning them into a book.  I didn't have a blog and didn't know I was going to start a pattern company.  And since I've never taken art or design classes of any kind, I certainly didn't feel qualified to write a book.

But one thing led to another and my just for fun project became a book.

I didn't want S is for Stitch to be another "here are some designs and instructions" sort of craft book.  So I wrote much of the text as if I was having a conversation with you - my imaginary readers.  But it was all about the technical side of embroidery and not so much about the creativity.  And when I was reviewing an early draft of the book - all organized and laid out with the "how to's" - I thought it was missing something and found myself wanting to share more personal information.  I really wanted to connect with people like me - people who have a creative spirit, but who don't feel "qualified" to design.

My solution was simple:  beside every one of the 52 designs in the book, I wrote a little something.  Because, as it turns out, even though I wasn't formally schooled as a designer I have somehow learned a few things over the years about how to make embroidery interesting ... and pretty ... and easy to stitch.

Sometimes I wrote about what I was thinking that dictated my design decisions:

Sometimes I wrote about "arty" techniques I used to achieve certain features:

Sometimes I wrote about exploiting specific stitches:

Sometimes I wrote about how you can change my designs to make them your own:

Sometimes I wrote about how I made the girl quilt very personal for my daughters and me:

And sometimes, when I was at a complete loss for something to say, I just wrote ... something!  LOL!

I hope my little anecdotes make the book interesting and informative.

And now how - exactly - does one end a book tour?

Tada?

The End?

Oh.  Right.  A giveaway!  You didn't think I'd forget, did you? ;)

Please leave me a comment (with your name and a valid email address!) telling me which one of the above anecdotes you like best and you'll be entered to win a copy of S is for Stitch!  If you are a US resident, you'll be sent a hard copy of the book.  If you live elsewhere, you'll receive an eBook.  All the giveaways close Thursday April 4th and the winners will be announced on Monday, April 8th.

I really hope you enjoyed these special peeks into my book and that you're totally motivated to pick up a needle and get stitching!

And a great big thank you from the bottom of my heart to Stash Books, Allison H, Amanda, Amy, Anne, Lori & Sherri for playing along.  Couldn't have done this without you! xo

How does one pick a favorite, Kristyne? If I must, I'd have to say x's and o's because my wonderful daughter and best friend just told me I was about to be a grandma for the first time! She's my Christmas angel (12/25 bday) and now I'm about to be blessed again! Could life be any better? Only I I won your book!

I love your anecdote about the umbrella. It reminds me of when my daughter was 2 years old I took her out on a rainy day with her little umbrella and taught her the song "Dancing in the Rain".

I love your individualized letters...especially the ant! I am wondering if S is for strawberry too. I think I would have to personalize that...you give me confidence. Thanks for the book and the giveaway. Loved the week of reviews.

I have to agree with several here that the A is for Ant comment is adorable. We all get stumped for words at times and sometimes no words are necessary. But alas, we fill the void and just put down anything hehehe. You are adorable and so is your book.

Congrats Krystine on an amazing book! I really love "X Marks the Spot" because the map is curled and the traveling line is, too. Very creative! I will have to get this book and make many burp cloths and bibs for the upcoming baby showers I have. Your designs are too cute. I'm dying over the tutu!

"X" marks the spot - loved your comment. This is a wonderful book with the best designs for simple embroidery. I've been hoping someone would publish a book like this - thank you!

X is for X's and O's is my favorite because it sums up the sweet appeal of your designs and theme of the book: the designs should be sewn with a personal touch, capture a point in time to give them motion and simplicity to keep the naive. I look forward to adding them to quilts for my grands...to capture a memory.

I love the umbrella! So much fun.

For me there are 2 anecdotes that brought a smile to my face. The first was X & O's because my son and I played it alot when he was a little guy so that one holds special memories. The other was the ant - how could you not love the little ant? Now that I think about it there was a story my son loved to read and we always made our own special character voices and sound affects.

This book makes me want to get serious about learning how to embroider.

I have really enjoyed your book tour, especially your stop! It was great to learn about the book's humble beginnings and the blurbs you added for each motif. I *really* want this book, but I am having to save my pennies right now. Hopefully I can win, or I'll just have to learn a little more patience.

While I loved the umbrella, I have to pick the dress... maybe because I remembered a personal note as well, about reading Anne of Green Gables, and her dreamy dress with those sleves (I read it in Spanish, so no idea how to say the way those sleeves were, sorry!).

LOVELY book! Original point of view :)

I love what you wrote for the Tic Tac Toe embroidery stitch. It's a great idea for the kids to help with the design and it is a great personal touch. I cannot wait to see the other designs and thank you for the giveaways! Good luck everyone!

Wow! Wow! Wow! I have been falling in love with your book from the first day of the hop. Everyone did such a great job reviewing the book. Your little extras and the way you share with your readers is just awesome. I love hearing how different people design, create and their whole process. You telling us what you were thinking or suggestions on different stitches etc. is so inspiring. I love the stitches on the jump rope for J. Having your kids start a game of X's and O's is brilliant. I could go on for all the letters you showed, hehe. You are so creative and inspiring and Thank you so much for sharing it all with us. My birthday is around the corner and I will be dropping hints to the family, hehe.

Thank you and Stash Books for a super giveaway and a chance to win.

X MARKS THE SPOT is brilliant! How did you think of it? My little girl loves adventure and pirates and I think I'm going to use this idea in a little knickknack for her.

It's tricky to choose my favourite anecdote, I love your comment about the umbrella being left on the floor by a child, but also the game of X & O with your kids - it certainly sounds like the reader can enjoy a little insight into your head as they explore this book. thanks for generously sharing!

What a lovely story. I would love a copy of the book just to red about you and how you came to all that you have designed. I read your blog regularly - it is in my blog roll and has been for some time. My favourite would have to be X marks the spot.... and dont we all use that!

As usual, I smiled all the way through reading your post, but the happy ant gave me a chuckle as I can readily imagine the parade of happy ants who always discover where you've put down food.
